Greetings!

Whether your industry is booming or headed for a bust, now is the time to market yourself Lately, we've lived through the rise, fall and rebuilding of the financial industry, the dot.com boom and bust, and most recently, the decline of the mortgage industry. According to one New York investment firm, as many as 20% of the nation's real estate loan officers and mortgage brokers will be fired in the coming months. Disconcerting? Sure. Especially if you're in sales. But taking steps now to maximize your marketability will ensure your next job hunt is a breeze, whether your industry's in trouble or flying high. Marketability isn't based on who you work for, but the skill set you've acquired and, hopefully, cultivated. There are many ways to improve your marketability. According to Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D, professor, author, and founder of Quintessential Careers, understanding the key marketing concepts of job-hunting, including the importance of touting your accomplishments, will improve your chances of finding your dream job. Besides updating your resume regularly, Hansen cites three keys to improving your marketablility: personal and professional development, preparation, and networking. Enhance your personal and professional development:

  • Read newspapers and trade journals regularly to stay abreast of key business and field-related issues Make sure you have the appropriate education for the job you wantAttend seminars and workshopsJoin at least one professional group
  • Make sure you've had increasing levels of responsibility during the last five years

Be prepared

  • Identify your key skills and abilities, and strengths and weaknessesDress for successKnow what differentiates you from other applicantsIdentify exactly the type of job you want next
  • Research companies and industries

Network:

  • Keep in contact with colleagues you meet at professional events Stay in touch with former co-workers and managersAttend conventions and connect with those in your fieldIntroduce yourself to others at functions
  • Exchange business cards with new people you meet

Don't be caught off-guard when your industry changes - they always do. Instead, continuously look for ways to increase your marketability. If you're talented and possess a winning skill set, it won't matter where in the cycle you are, you'll find a new position in no time.
